Wessex Strings

Saturday 3rd May at 1.30pm

Conductor: John Jenkins
Leader: Shoko Middleton
Trumpet: David Bertie
Cor anglais: Allison Edwards

Wessex Strings are once again delighted to welcome two visiting musicians to join them in a delightfully eclectic programme. David Bertie and Allison Edwards combine forces to perform Copland’s Quiet City, featuring a highly individual pairing of trumpet and cor anglais. David begins the concert with the galant-style Trumpet Concerto in D major by Johann Friedrich Fasch. Then follow three exquisite miniatures: Elgar’s tender, intimate Elegy for Strings, an intense, richly textured Canzonetta by Sibelius and two gems from Walton’s music for the 1944 film Henry V. The strings round off the concert with Parry’s Lady Radnor’s Suite, revealing the composer in a lighter, reflective mood for his take on Baroque dance forms.
